The I Am One Youth Program is mentoring program works to develop youth through metoring, community service, and positive activities. I Am One gives youth the "Real Deal" about various life issues. The classes cover everything from teen relationships and sex, to education and health. We expose the youth by bringing in professionals in their respective fields to share information and skills. We provide examples of individuals in their community who have overcome various life circumstances to achieve various levels of success. Then we provide an exit into their future, through education, training, and activities.

I AM ONE YOUTH PROGRAM PRESENTS SCHOOL YEAR FINALE AT MIAMI CAROL CITY (2008-2009)

The I Am One Youth and Young Adult Program Celebrated its second year mentoring youth at Miami Carol City Senior High School. This year the program had the pleasure of sharing Life Skills and Positive activities with 9th graders in Ms. Walker’s 3rd and 4th Period classes. The youth discussed and learned information on various subjects including goal setting, healthy emotional development, and sex education.

In addition to classes and discussions the youth participated in various community activities including the delivery of Turkey and Food Baskets donated by Commissioner Barbara Jordan and the City of Miami Gardens, a Christmas Giveaway, and Clothing Drive for the Victims of the storm in Haiti. They also enjoyed various activities including the opportunity to view the Live Production of Annie at the Arhst Center in Miami.

This year’s season finale was a presentation of the African American experience from slavery to the present. The show highlighted the invention age where famous black inventors like Madame CJ Walker (Straightening Comb and Black Hair Products) and James West (Microphones and Microphone chips) made everlasting contributions to our society. It also highlighted contributors to the Civil Rights Era. The students re-enacted the confrontational scene from the Little Rock Nine event, where the Governor of Arkansas used National Guards to prevent Black students form entering the school. The show ended with highlights form modern day successors like Oprah Winfrey, Mae Jameson, and President Barack Obama.  Miami Carol City’s Dance Team and Earnest Baker of Live In Color, lit the stage with dance presentations. Altogether the presentation and performances made the day an unforgettable experience.

After the presentation, Dr. Lorenzo Styles, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Commissioner Barbara Jordan for his commitment to the positive development of the youth he serves at Miami Carol City. The students enjoyed their year end finale with dancing and fun, as DJ Tarique of Miami played the student’s favorite tunes.

This year was a great year for the I Am One Program and the students who participated in the program. I Am One Youth Program is working to expand its staff and resources to provide mentoring to more students within the community.
